GETTING READY FOR YOUR KITTEN
Certain items need to be
bought for your new companion, a litter box is a essential any
flat bottomed container will work it's sides should be at least
4 or 6 inches tall, you can buy manufactured litter boxes from
pet supply stores. Some come equipped with covers, swinging doors,
the choice is yours. You will then need some cat
litter, it is best to find out of the breeder what type of cat
litter the kitten has been used to and try to buy the same the
kitten will then recognise the litter box easily. You should also
ask what food the kitten had been eating and buy the same for
him/her a sudden change in diet may upset the kitten stomach,
if you must change its diet intruduce it very slowly. You will
also need some feeding bowls which can easily be bought from
pet shops. It is a good idea to buy a scratch post a kitten
naturally needs to sharpen its claws and it is better to teach
the kitten to use a scratch post and not your furniture. There
are a vast array of scratch posts avaliable depending on the
space you have, some have different height platforms for your
cat to sleep on and maybe even a small cave for them to hide
in..Another essential item is a cat carrier, you must have
this when you pick your new kitten up as it is unsafe to drive
with a kitten loose in your car, visits to the vets will find
you needing a carrier so it is a good investment for the future,
try to buy one that will be big enough for your cat when it
is matured.
PROTECTING YOUR KITTEN
It is a good idea to confine the kitten for a
short period when intruduced to your home.Place the kittens
food and water bowl it's bed and litter tray and scrtach post
if you have one in a small room.If you are using the bathroom
for this make sure the toilet seat is down to stop your curious
kitten falling in.Let it explore this room before intruducing
it to the rest of the house.Make sure at first you watch it
carefully, once it has got used to the house you can then move
its food and litter tray to were you want them to be.
There are many hazards around the home including
household cleaning agents, fireplaces and certain houseplants.Irons,
lamps, fans and appliences with electrical cords are also a
danger, it is a bit like child proofing the home for a toddler
as they are just as curious and open to danger.
